Self-Taught Artists

As with formally trained artists, self-taught artists created artwork inspired by their experiences and communities. Some artists are self-taught for financial reasons; art classes might not be affordable, or family responsibilities meant foregoing art school for full-time employment. Others prefer to follow their own visions rather than the influence of peers, popular trends, or creative movements. Many use materials at hand, or found objects for a variety of reasons, including thrift, inventive resourcefulness, and/or concern for the earth. In any case, their ingenious artwork expands the scope of American aesthetics.
