- Caption
- A central figure presses their hands together in prayer and kneels behind a basin, while at least seven others form a semi-circle around them. Some are depicted in detail: one smiling woman kneels and bows her head, another raises both hands exuberantly in the air, while others are represented by dark silhouettes. As the viewer peers through an opening in the blankets hung between trees in this makeshift place of worship, she bears witness to the determination and ingenuity motivating African American spiritual practices. Washington, DC artist Roderick Turner was commissioned to draw this image for the Anacostia Neighborhood Museum’s 1987– 1988 exhibition on Black churches titled “Climbing Jacob’s Ladder.”
