- This small egg basket uses a combination of wood splints and round reeds woven in a plain weave. Strings of blue and green glass beads adorn the top of the handle and the area directly beneath the rim. These decorative elements contrast with the basket’s original, utilitarian form. Typical of egg baskets, a God’s Eye design connects the handle to the body.
- As a member of the greater Washington, D.C. craft guild, The Basket Bunch, artist Ira Blount taught others and learned new basket-making techniques. He has observed that the shape of egg baskets is both attractive and practical: to protect eggs from cracking. In addition to basketry, Ira Blount mastered dozens of artisanal crafts. His love for crafting, learning, and community engagement would endure over the course of his long life and career.
