Educators
The museum education department offers a variety of programs for both classroom teachers and students on community history and exhibition topics. Offerings include guided tours of the exhibitions on view and interpretive learning-level specific educational materials. Professional training sessions offer credit hours and provide teaching strategies and resources on a variety of subjects. The annual ACM Career Day is a special program that allows students to learn about work in a museum. Free transportation and lunch are provided.

Just for Educator’s Workshop: Dance 4 Peace
Dance 4 Peace is a global peace education nonprofit that transforms conflict, violence and bullying through dance and creative movement. The intensive training will equip teachers with the Dance 4 Peace toolkit and skills to instill movement based peace education tools and techniques in their classrooms and communities. Outreach for School Groups
Citizen Scientist Program
Experience Reclaiming the Edge: Urban Waterways and Civic Engagement in three parts during this full day of programming. First tour the exhibit at ACM; from there travel to Anacostia Park for a visit to DDOE’s Aquatic Research Center. Finally, participate in water testing and learning about the Anacostia River and how you impact the river and it impacts your health. The cost is $150.00 per group. Groups are limited to 20 persons for school groups 3rd grade and up.
Transportation is provided from school and back to school: SHUTTLE Anacostia will depart from your school at 9:30 a.m. and returns at 2:30 p.m. RSVP is required; call 202-633-4844.

A Tale of Two Teams: Washington’s Unknown Champions
A discussion about two of the city’s little known championship teams, the 1939 Homestead Grays and the 1943 Washington (Lichtman) Bears, who won the 1943 World Series of Basketball in Chicago against the best white and black talent in a national tournament. Learn the cultural backdrop for the time frame (U Street social life, Turner’s Arena, lavish galas and balls held after games). One was a segregated championship, the other was not.

Career Day at the Anacostia Community Museum
Bring your students to the Anacostia Community Museum to learn about some of the exciting and rewarding careers in museums. They will not only tour the exhibition Reclaiming the Edge: Urban Waterways and Civic Engagement but also learn about the various jobs required to create a museum exhibition. Students will receive a behind-the-scenes tour of the museum and meet the staff to learn about their career paths that led them to work at the Smithsonian.
The afternoon session of Career Day will include a surprise field trip to an educational organization in the DC area. Free lunch, bus transportation, and educational resources will be provided to the middle or high school group that reserves this tour. Reservations are required; call (202) 633-4844.

Washington, DC—Basketball Capital of the World
This presentation educates you on how Washington became a basketball hotbed and discusses the great figures who shaped the story. Learn about the life and influence of Dr. E. B. Henderson, including his mentorship of Dr. Charles Drew. Understand how local athletes played competitively in games held outside the Jim Crow color lines before the 1954 Brown decision. Be entertained by the unique series of circumstances, involving individuals, landmark games, and local demographics, which helped catapult Washington to the forefront of the basketball world.
